About Down East Setters and Labs

Down East Setters and Labs is a small, home-based breeding and training program in rural Maine. We specialize in dual-purpose Labrador Retrievers and Irish Setters — dogs that are as comfortable in the home as they are in the field. Our goal is to raise puppies with excellent conformation, intelligence, health, and temperament. Each puppy is bred to be a loyal family companion while also having the drive and ability to hunt, retrieve, or excel in fieldwork. Living on over 80 acres, our dogs enjoy plenty of room to run, explore, and thrive. We raise our puppies in our home from day one, giving them constant attention, care, and early socialization. They’re introduced to the everyday sights and sounds of a household, from vacuums to thunderstorms (thanks to our sound system), helping them grow into confident, adaptable dogs. Each puppy is handled daily, with focus on desensitization — ears, feet, tails, mouths, and eyes — to make grooming and vet visits easier later on. By the time they go home, our puppies are already crate-trained, sleeping through the night on their own for at least a week to ensure a smoother transition into your routine. Our dogs aren’t just hunting partners — they’re family members. They love being out in the field, but they’re just as happy curled up on the couch for a movie night. We also enjoy participating in dog sports, and our Setters especially love running Fast CATs! For new puppy families, we offer personal delivery anywhere in the U.S. at a very reasonable cost, with discounted rates when multiple puppies are traveling in the same direction.
