Puppies are born deaf and blind but with their noses wide open! We immediately start associating smells, tastes, physical contact, and all environmental inputs with them so that when their eyes open they associate what they see with the smells and taste we have embedded in their memories. When they can hear, we ring a bell to associate the sound with the taste smell and sight. For example a little smell then a drop of gravy on their tongue and then as they grow every time we ring the bell and give them a treat they associate the sound of a ring bell with something good! Building on that, when it's time to go outside for potty training we ring the bell by the back door and they all come running. By the time they're 6 weeks old, all the puppies are hurling themselves out of the doggie door into the backyard for potty training. We take special care to do many hours of sensory input including loud noises, car rides, submersing the body up to the neck in water, and too many more examples to list. This method embeds memories that definitely affect behaviors later in life, such as not to be startled at loud noises, perhaps to become a swimming dog, and too many more to list. I'm against crate training, specifically using a crate with metal bars especially over long periods of time. We do recommend a soft crate however because dogs are den animals that need a dark quiet safe place as a refuge. Ultimately all of our dogs and all of our babies are in the bed with us every night snoring in our ear cuddling against our neck, heartbeat to heart beat, breath to breath, and we wouldn't have it any other way! Unlike other breeders who may have nine females, kept in a kennel, and puppies may or may not get some attention or touch; these super special rarities here share our life, and ARE our life! My parents were dog breeders of Irish setters I literally was going to AKC shows while I was in diapers.
