Overview
Not sure which breed is right for you? The Breed Match Quiz asks 8 simple questions about your lifestyle and preferences, then recommends breeds that would be the best fit. No account is required to take the quiz.
How to Take the Quiz
- Go to the quiz at
/breeds/quiz, or click "Breed Match Quiz" from the Breeds menu. - Answer each question honestly. The quiz covers:
- Living space — Apartment, house with yard, rural property, etc.
- Activity level — How active are you on a daily basis?
- Kids in home — Do you have children?
- Grooming commitment — How much time can you spend on grooming?
- Experience level — Have you owned pets before?
- Time availability — How much time can you dedicate to your pet daily?
- And 2 additional lifestyle questions.
- View your results. After the final question, you will see your top breed matches with images and compatibility scores.
Understanding Your Results
Your results show the breeds that best match your lifestyle, ranked by compatibility. Each result includes:
- Breed name and photo
- Why this breed matches your lifestyle
- Key traits that align with your answers
Click on any breed to view its full profile in the Breed Encyclopedia, or use the Comparison Tool to evaluate your top matches side by side.
The Breed Family Quiz
Already know you want a certain type of dog (e.g., a Retriever or a Terrier)? The Breed Family Quiz at /breeds/quiz/family helps you narrow down to the specific breed within a family:
- Select a breed family (Retrievers, Terriers, Shepherds, etc.).
- Answer a few targeted questions.
- See which specific breed within that family is your best match.
Tips
- Answer based on your current lifestyle, not aspirational changes.
- Take the quiz more than once with different answers to explore options.
- Use quiz results as a starting point, then research your top matches in depth.
- Discuss results with your family before making a decision.
