Using the Breed Encyclopedia

The Breed Encyclopedia is your comprehensive guide to over 270 dog and cat breeds. Each breed profile includes detailed information about temperament, health considerations, care requirements, and history — everything you need to determine if a breed is right for your lifestyle.

1. Navigate to the encyclopedia. Click "Breeds" in the top navigation, or go to /breeds.
2. Filter by species. Toggle between All, Dogs, or Cats.
3. Apply additional filters:
   • Breed family — Group breeds by type (Retrievers, Terriers, Shepherds, etc.).
   • Size — Small, Medium, Large, or Giant.
   • Energy level — Low, Moderate, High, or Very High.
   • Grooming needs — Low, Moderate, or High maintenance.
   • Trainability — Easy, Moderate, or Challenging.
   • Good with kids — Filter for family-friendly breeds.
   • Good with pets — Filter for breeds that coexist well with other animals.
4. Search by name. Type a breed name into the search field for instant results.
5. Click a breed card to view its full profile.

Each breed profile includes:

• Photo gallery — High-quality images of the breed.
• Key characteristics — At-a-glance traits like size, energy, grooming, and temperament.
• Breed family — Classification within its breed group.
• Temperament and personality — What living with this breed is like.
• Health considerations — Common health issues and recommended testing.
• Living requirements — Space, exercise, and climate needs.
• Grooming and care — Coat care, bathing frequency, and maintenance.
• History — The breed's origin and development.
• Breeders — Find breeders offering this breed, filterable by location.
