Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication
Add an extra layer of security to your Pet Breeder Hub account with two-factor authentication (MFA) using an authenticator app or SMS.
Overview
Two-factor authentication (also called MFA or 2FA) adds an extra step when you log in. After entering your password, you will be asked for a one-time code from your phone. This protects your account even if someone else learns your password.
Pet Breeder Hub supports two MFA methods:
- Authenticator app (TOTP) — Recommended. Works with Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, and similar apps.
- SMS — A code is sent to your phone via text message.
Before You Begin
- You must be logged in to your account.
- For authenticator app setup, have your phone ready with an authenticator app installed.
- For SMS setup, have access to the phone number you want to register.
Setting Up an Authenticator App
- Navigate to Security Settings. If you are a pet seeker, go to Account → Security. If you are a breeder, go to Breeder Dashboard → Account tab.
- Find the "Two-Factor Authentication" section. Click "Enable" next to the TOTP option.
- Scan the QR code. Open your authenticator app and use it to scan the QR code displayed on screen. If you cannot scan the code, click "Enter manually" and type the secret key into your app.
- Enter the 6-digit code. Your authenticator app will generate a code. Type it into the verification field and click "Verify".
- Save your backup codes. You will be shown a set of one-time backup codes. Save these in a secure place (such as a password manager). If you ever lose access to your authenticator app, you can use a backup code to log in.
Setting Up SMS Verification
- Navigate to Security Settings (same as above).
- Click "Enable" next to the SMS option.
- Enter your phone number including country code (e.g., +1 for the United States).
- Click "Send Code". A verification code will be sent to your phone via SMS.
- Enter the code in the verification field and click "Verify".
Disabling Two-Factor Authentication
If you need to turn off MFA, go to your Security Settings and click "Disable" next to the active MFA method. You may be asked to confirm with your current code before it is removed.
Note: We strongly recommend keeping MFA enabled, especially for breeder accounts that manage sensitive business information.
Troubleshooting
My authenticator codes are not working.
- Make sure the time on your phone is set to automatic. TOTP codes depend on accurate time synchronization.
- Try generating a fresh code — codes change every 30 seconds.
I lost access to my authenticator app.
- Use one of the backup codes you saved during setup to log in.
- Once logged in, disable the old MFA method and set up a new one.
- If you do not have backup codes, contact support for account recovery.
I am not receiving SMS codes.
- Verify your phone number is correct in your security settings.
- Check that your phone has signal and can receive text messages.
- Some carriers may block short-code messages. Contact your carrier if this persists.
